A Quick Overview of the Wolfbox G850
Wolfbox are the leader vendor of rear-view mirror mounted dash cams in the US. Their G850 was released in 2022. It includes a rear camera.
Rear view mirror dash cams have the advantage that you don’t need to stick an extra device on your windshield. Instead, you attach the dash cam directly on the car’s existing rear view mirror. Rubber straps for mounting are included.
The corresponding rear camera is water proof, and Wolfbox recommend to install it outside the vehicle for best visibility. Its cable is 20 feet long. If that’s not enough for your vehicle, an extension to 33ft is available separately.
The G850 includes a 12″ touch screen, and it doesn’t have any buttons. It claims to record 4K resolution forward, and 1080p to the rear.
Considering the price of the G850, we find it unlikely that it actually records at 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels, at 30fps). Until we can confirm which optical sensor the Wolfbox G850 uses, we can neither confirm nor deny if it is actually a true 4K dash cam by our definition.
Video Quality
Forward video quality is good (3/5) during the day, and fair (2/5) at night. At day, you should be able to read license plates of other cars when they are close enough. At night, readability is hit and miss.
The rear camera records at only 25fps, and its footage generally lacks sharpness. Rear video quality is fair (2/5) during the day, and mediocre (1/5) at night. While you can see what is going on around you, you won’t be able to read most license plates at night.
Our total video score for the Wolfbox G850 is 2.0/5. Check our comparison table for an explanation of video scores, and to compare the G850 side-by-side to other front and rear dash cams.
Time-lapse Parking Mode
Parking mode is available when the G850 is hard-wired. A hard-wiring kit is available separately for about $20.
To install the hard-wiring kit, connect the yellow cable to the power supply in the fuse box, the red cable to ACC, and the black wire to ground.
With parking mode enabled, the camera records at a low frame rate when the engine is off, resulting in a time-lapse video that’s saved in a protected folder. When you resume driving, it switches back to normal recording.
Observations
As is customary for dash cams, video files lock automatically when the G-sensor detects a collision or an impact.
You can also lock files manually, but since there’s no dedicated lock file button, you have to click twice on the touch screen to actually lock the current video. Once to open the menu, and then once more to actually lock the file.
This is much more complicated than just pressing a simple button, and can be distracting while driving.
Alternatively, you can use the cameras voice command feature to lock video files.
NOTE: If your car’s cigarette lighter is powered when the engine is off, you’ll need to use a hard-wiring kit to power the dash cam. Otherwise, it can drain your car’s battery while you’re away.
User Manual
This camera’s user manual is 48 pages long. It’s a bit clunky to read, but since the camera’s functionality is rather basic it should be enough to get you up and running.
Conclusion
The Wolfbox G850 is available for a relatively low price, considering it records front and rear. Video quality could be better though. The low frame rate of the rear camera is disappointing.

- Waterproof rear camera
