Viofo A329 Review
Design
From the outside, the A329 looks pretty much like most of Viofo’s other dash cams. I guess it’s a case of “never change a winning design”!
Just like the extremely successful A229 and A119 series, the A329 too comes in a wedge-shaped casing. It has a 2.4″ screen, 5 LEDs below the screen, and 5 buttons below those.
The middle button is the lock file button. It is larger, and has a different shape than the other four, which are for navigation. This makes it easy to find just by reaching over with your hand, without taking your eyes off the road.
Unique Features
The exciting thing about the Viofo A329 is that it supports several features that so far, no other dash cam does. These features include Wi-Fi 6 for fast video transfer, CPL filters for both the front and the rear cameras, HDR front and rear, and 4K@60fps recording with the front camera (though not with HDR active). It also supports recording to an external SSD (solid state drive) via a USB-C connection.
Of course the A329 also takes normal SD memory cards, up to 512GB SD in size. You can either record video to the memory card, or to external storage. Both at the same time isn’t possible, but you can always backup video from the card to an SSD.
What’s Wi-Fi 6?
For our not so technical readers: Wi-Fi 6 is a Wi-Fi standard that operates according to the 802.11ax protocol. It’s the 6th generation of Wi-Fi. As such, it offers a maximum download speed that’s almost 3 times faster than the previous generation (Wi-Fi 6: 9.6 Gbps, Wi-Fi 5: 3.5 Gbps max speed).
This is independent from the frequency band used. Wi-Fi 6 can operate either with 2.4 GHz or with 5 GHz bands. There’s also an extension protocol, called Wi-Fi 6E, which supports the 6 GHz band. This extension protocol is not supported by the A329 though.
Nevertheless, Wi-Fi 6 is ideal for transmitting video at high bit rates. The Viofo A329 is the first dash cam tho support this standard.
Video Quality
Where the Viofo A329 really shines is the video quality it records. With Sony Starvis 2 sensors front and rear, and HDR available for both, its footage is comparable in quality to the Viofo A229 Pro. Slightly better, actually.
Our only gripe is that while the forward camera can record at up to 60fps, it can’t do so when HDR is enabled. So if you enable HDR to improve night vision, it will “only” record at 30fps.

As you can see in the sample videos below: Forward video footage is very good (4.0), both at day and at night. Meaning you should be able to read license plates without pausing the video. Rear video is good to very good (3.5) at day, and good (3.0) at night.
Video Samples
For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.
Day Time Front Video Sample
Front video quality at day is very good. License plates of other cars are easy to read even when driving by. 4 points out of 5.
Day Time Rear Video Sample
Rear video quality during the day is good to very good. Whether you can read license plates or not depends very much on the viewing angle, and relative speeds. However, in case of doubt you can always pause the video and then the plates are clear. We’re giving 3.5 points.
Night Time Front Video Sample
Forward video at night is very good. Most license plates are easy to read, even at a bit of a distance. 4 points.
Night Time Rear Video Sample
Rear video at night is good quality. You may need to pause the video to read license plates. 3/5 points.
Parking Modes
The Viofo A329 supports 3 different parking modes. As usual, it needs a power supply for parking mode to work. You can either use the Viofo HK4 hard wiring kit, or if you’re feeling fancy, a dash cam battery pack.
Here’s a quick rundown of Viofo’s parking modes again, in case you aren’t familiar:
- Buffered: Records continually. Saves video from 15 sec before to 30 sec after an event (detected by G-sensor or visually)
- Time-lapse: Records with reduced frame rate, configurable from 1 to 10 fps
- Low Bit Rate: Records with reduced video quality to save disk space. Not recommended because you might be unable to read license plates this way.
Voice Commands
Apart from using the on-screen menu or the smart phone app, you can also control the A329 by speaking to. It understands a good dozen of spoken commands, in four languages (English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese).
The most important voice commands are “Lock the video”, “Turn on/off Wi-Fi”, and “Take photo”. Other commands let you turn the screen on or off, toggle audio, and switch between camera feeds.
External SSD
This is one of the first dash cams that can record to external storage. A USB-C data cable is included, to connect to a solid-state drive (SSD) up to 4TB in size. The manufacturer recommends using a PSSD (portable SSD). They’ve tested that the following models work well with the dash cam:

- Samsung T7 Shield
- Sandisk Extreme
Now you might be asking yourself, how many hours of video will fit in 4 Terabytes of storage?
Viofo says in the documentation that a 4TB SDD will last over 4 weeks “if you record an average of 3 hours a day”. According to our own calculations, 4TB is enough to store over 98 hours of front and rear video at maximum bit rates.
So if you do drive for 3 hours per day on average, that comes out to almost 33 days, which is indeed more than 4 weeks.
SD Card Capacity
If you use an SD card, the maximum supported card size is 512GB. That’s enough to hold some 12 hours of video. Not very much. If you drive a lot, it may actually be preferable to get that external hard drive.
Bear in mind the A329 records two video streams, both at very high bit rates. That’s a plus in terms of video quality, but it’s also why it uses up storage space so quick.
Viofo recommend using their own (Viofo branded) memory cards in their cameras. Other cards are said to potentially cause stability issues.
Included Accessories
The A329 comes with a USB-C data cable and a CPL filter for the front camera. A CPL filter for the rear camera is not included, but is available as an extra.
The power supply is a charger that plugs into the car’s cigarette lighter. It has two USB-C connectors. One is for the dash cam, and the other one is free for another device.
A printed copy of the user manual is also in the box. If you follow the link, it will let you download a 30MB PDF with 23 pages. The English version of the manual is well written, and explains the camera’s usage in all necessary detail.

The following accessories are not included in the box, but are available separately and thus will cost you extra:

High-End Dash Cam Comparison: Viofo A329 vs. BlackVue DR970X vs. Thinkware U3000
The Viofo A329, BlackVue DR970X, and Thinkware U3000 are all high-end dash cams, with prices in the $400 to $500 range.
While the BlackVue and Thinkware support cloud connectivity, the Viofo doesn’t have that option. If you want cloud, the DR970X is the most advanced regard. If you’ll be using parking mode for extended periods of time, get the Thinkware with its radar mode.
Anyone else, we recommend the Viofo since it has the best video quality and is very reliable.
Conclusion
With its steep price tag, the Viofo A329 probably isn’t affordable for everyone. However, due to its outstanding video quality, great reliability, and exciting new features like Wi-Fi 6 and SSD support, it’s our favorite high-end camera for early 2025.
If you’re looking for a reliable cutting-edge dash cam without cloud, the A329 is the best option currently out there. On the other hand, if you’d prefer to spend a bit less, Viofo’s A229 Pro and A229 Plus are great alternatives.
