Redtiger F77 Introduction
The Redtiger F77 is a dual-channel dash cam released in 2024. Interestingly, it can record at 4K resolution not only with the front camera, but also on the rear channel.
Other innovations include: 5.8 GHz Wifi-6, and an integrated 128GB eMMC card that eliminates the need for a separate SD card.
There’s also a newer version, called F77 v2, that has 256GB instead of 128GB of internal memory.
If you want to, you can use an SD card to backup files there, or to transfer files to another device like a PC for example. Remember that the files are not recorded to the SD card automatically, so you have to copy them manually through the camera’s menu.
Design
It has to be said that this camera is quite large, and could even be considered a bit clunky. With the need to process not one, but two 4K video streams simultaneously, the Redtiger F77 needs a lot of processing power. Consequently, there was clearly a need to dissipate a lot of generated heat.
So both the front and rear cameras are larger than average. Unsurprisingly, both are generously equipped with thermal venting slots.
A positive aspect of the camera’s large size is that it allows for a comfortably large 4″ (diagonal) touch screen. This is the largest screen we’ve seen on a dash cam so far, and this in turn makes it easier to operate.
For comparison: Modern smart phones are typically about 6″ to 6.5″ in size.
Underneath the F77, there are 4 little buttons to navigate the cameras menus. Of course, you can also navigate the settings using the touch screen, or configure the camera over Wi-Fi with the phone app.
Redtiger F77 Features Overview
Features That Most Dash Cams Have
Lets start with the basics. Pretty much all modern dash cams have the following:
- Loop recording
- Auto on/off
- Time and date stamp on video
- Voice control (see below)
- GPS
- Some form of parking mode (with a hard-wiring kit)
We’ve covered these features extensively in our Introduction To Dashboard Cameras, so check that out if you’re not sure what some of those mean.
Unique Features
Here’s a quick what sets the F77 apart from (most) other dash cams:
- 4″ touch screen: The only dash cam with a screen this large.
- Wi-Fi at 5GHz: Most dash cams also support the 2.4GHz band — the Redtiger F77 doesn’t. This shouldn’t be a problem unless you are using older hardware (like a phone) that doesn’t have support for 5 GHz Wi-Fi. 5 GHz is faster, but it also has a lower range through walls (this shouldn’t be an issue for dash cam use, because you will mostly be connecting with your phone when sitting in the car).
- Internal eMMC storage. You won’t need an extra SD card at all, though a slot for an SD card is present should you opt to use one. Be aware the camera can only record to its internal storage, not to a card.
Voice Commands
Most modern dash cams support voice commands. The Redtiger F77, in particular, allows you to use the following spoken commands:
- “Lock the video”
- “Take picture”
- “Turn on/off audio”
- “Turn on/off screen”
- “Turn on/off Wi-Fi”
- “Turn on/off recording”
- “Show front/rear camera”
If you ever forget which commands you can use, there’s a handy list in the camera’s settings (Navigate to Settings -> Voice control).
Usability & Observations
Parking Mode: Use Time-Lapse, Impact Is Too Slow
The F77 supports time-lapse and impact triggered parking modes. For this to work, you need a compatible hard wiring kit (available separately).
Note that impact parking mode takes a long time to wake up: About 12-13 seconds. This is unacceptably long — whoever bumped into your car might be gone by the time the camera starts recording.
Lock file button
The lock file button is one of a row of 4 buttons underneath the camera (the button with the left arrow on it). It can be hard to find while driving, so this will take some getting used to. A dedicated, larger lock file button would be easier to use.
Copying Large Numbers Of Files
It’s great that the F77 works without an SD card. However, if you ever want to move a large number of files to another device, this means you have to either transfer them over Wi-Fi, or copy them to a memory card. Both methods are slow.
The camera can’t be set to record to a memory card automatically.
Both methods are slow. This is fine if you only need the dash cam to have evidence in case of an accident: In that case, you won’t need to copy many files. But if you are interested in recording scenic drives, for example, you should keep this in mind.
User Manual & Support
The user manual for this camera is available here. It is about 30 pages long, and explains the basic functionality of the camera well without going into too much unnecessary detail.
Customer support is available by phone, email, and Whatsapp.
CPL Filter
Circular Polarizing Lens (CPL) filters reduce reflections on the wind shield when driving in bright sunlight. Unfortunately, there’s no CPL filter available from Redtiger that fits the F77.
Video Quality Analysis Of The Redtiger F77
Now, let’s have a good look at the performance of this camera. We’ve analyzed video footage from both channels, at day and at night.
For each channel, we assign a score for day and night video quality. Our scores go from 0 to 5, 5 being best. Here’s a detailed description of how our video scoring system works.
To appreciate these samples videos at optimum quality, we recommend you watch them on a 4K monitor and make sure to select 4K resolution in the Youtube player’s settings (using the cog wheel in the lower right corner).
Day Time Front Video Sample
Video quality of the front camera during the day time is excellent. We can clearly distinguish and read the plates of nearby cars at various times: For example, at 0:51, 1:25, 1:41, at the traffic light stop around 2:05, and then again at 2:40. Environmental details are also very well visible at all times. If you wanted to, you could practically count the fallen red leaves lying next to the road.
Our verdict for front day video quality: 5 points out of 5.
Day Time Rear Video Sample
Even though the rear camera also records at 4K, it’s much harder to read license plates of the traffic behind us. In fact, even pausing the video, we can’t make out any plates until time stamp 1:55.
At that point, we can read the plate of the car next to us. A few seconds later, at the traffic light stop around 2:03, we can read the plate of the car behind us. It continues to be readable while the car follows us, until around 2:28 in the video.
In this video, readability of license plates is varied. At 0:48, the plate of the car to the left is blurred through motion. A few seconds later, around 0:57, the number of the car behind us is clearly visible, but the plate to the right of us remains hard to impossible to read even when pausing the video.
Then, at 1:18, we can read the plate to the right when the sun shines on it. And a bit later, at 1:36, we can read the license of the yellow car to the left for several seconds, without pausing the video.
Overall verdict for rear video during the day: License plate readability is hit an miss. Video quality is fair (2.0/5).
Night Time Front Video Sample
Forward video at night is a mixed bag. In some situations, we can easily read the license plates of moving cars without even pausing the feed, like at the start of this video and around 1:22. At 0:59, we can read the license of the parked car to the right if we press pause.
However, we do have a lot of glare from street lights, and other artifacts. Also, street signs often aren’t easily readable.
This front night video looks better than the previous one. We can often read license plates while moving, such as at 1:35 (press pause) and 1:44 (without pausing). At 1:52, we can even read the registration number of the car on the roundabout for a brief instant.
Later, we are able to read some (but not all) of the plates of the parked cars by the road.
That said, again there’s a lot of glare from traffic lights and other light sources. So taking all this into account, we’re giving 3.0/5 points (good video) for the front channel at night.
Night Time Rear Video Sample
Rear video quality at night is mediocre (1.0/5). We can see more or less what’s going on behind our car, but it’s impossible to read any license plates even of nearby cars.
Total Video Score
The average of the individual scores gives us a Total Video Score of 2.75/5.
Compare this score with that of other dual channel dash cams using our comparison table.
Conclusion
Having 4K resolution both ways sounds impressive on paper, but honestly, the F77’s video quality doesn’t live up to the expectations. We’ve analyzed dash cams that record better video quality even though they record at lower resolutions, like as the Viofo A229 Plus which is currently one of our favorites.
That being said, the Redtiger F77 is by no means a bad dash cams. If you’re aware of the pros and cons and find this camera is a fit for your needs, you’ll get a camera that will give you peace of mind for your daily commutes.
