Falcon Zero F170 Review

Released early 2015, the Falcon Zero F170 quickly became a top seller, receiving some excellent customer ratings. It records 1080p Full HD video, with video quality being good during the day and fair at night time.

It has all the standard features one would expect of a 2015 dash cam, including auto on/off, loop recording, and a G-sensor. It has an unbuffered parking mode with motion detection, meaning that when you are parked, you can set up the camera to come alive whenever any movement is detected (either visually or by the G-sensor). It will then record whatever happens after the event for the next 10 seconds.

The F170 supports GPS, and its GPS data can be overlaid on Google maps using the camera’s player software (available for Windows and Mac). It also supports WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) for enhanced night vision, however this has to be activated manually in the camera’s menu. The menus are not very intuitive unfortunately.

An integrated 2.7″ screen making the Falcon F170 easy to operate and allows you to play back video on the spot. Its field of view is 170 degrees, which is pretty much the highest you can get. The camera’s electronics help to reduce the fish-eye effect.

While this is by no means a bad camera, it does seem a bit overpriced for what it does. For a similar price, you can get dashboard cameras with higher resolution and better video quality than the F170. The fact that this device received great reviews helped a lot to increase its popularity, however it’s not always possible to verify the authenticity of these reviews.

Falcon Zero F170 Video Samples

For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.

Day Time Video Sample

Video quality at day time is good despite difficult lighting conditions (i.e. driving towards low standing sun). License plates of other cars are readable at medium distance, even on a dimly lit road.

Night Time Video Sample

Night video quality is fair, considering this is a dark road without any street lights.
