Modern dash cams should support at least 1080p resolution (1920×1080 pixels, also known as Full HD). Dash cams that record at 720p (HD) or lower are outdated and not good enough to read license plates.
Dual channel dash cams should support Full HD or better for both the front and the rear video channel.

The F500LHD is one of the cheaper dash cams, but it records 1080p @ 30fps with great video quality during the day. Night video quality is less great, but still acceptable. Highly reliable. Records in .MOV. Tripod screw mount. No GPS.

Itronics ITB-100HD SP Smart Plus

The Itronics ITB-100HD SP Smart Plus is a high-end Korean dashboard camera valued around $340. It features in-built GPS, Full HD recording at 30fps, voice alerts and is of a good overall quality. However it does suffer from a couple of drawbacks, the most important of which is its low bit rate.

The DR32 delivers great video quality day and night, taking into account that it costs less than $150. Unlike most other dash cams it has a standard tripod screw mount. Cons: Its not so discreet form factor and some reliability issues that are still being worked on.

The Vico-TF2+ Premium features great video quality day and night. Large viewing angle of 160°. Very heat resistant due to large casing (up to 75˚C/167˚F). 2.4″ screen. No GPS and the rather taste-dependent form factor are the main drawbacks.
