Street Guardian SGGCX2 Review
The SGGCX2, released in 2018, is an improved version of Street Guardian’s already excellent SG9665GC dash cam. It uses a similar casing, made of high quality materials, and with a discreet wedge-shape. One of the major improvements is that it allows the lens to swivel around up to 90 degrees, so the camera can be mounted on vertical windows.
Informally this camera is also known as Street Guardian SG9665GC v4. However the manufacturer says that there have been enough changes to warrant a new model number. (See below for a complete list of all the changes.)
Street Guardian are an Australian company that are well known for their attention to detail and outstanding customer support. They consistently get very good ratings from their clients. Should you need any help installing or using your camera, call them or contact them by email, you’ll usually get a fast and helpful reply.
Video quality is excellent at day, and very good at night time — seriously rivaling Vicovation’s Opia2, which has thus far been our favorite camera in terms of video quality.
When you order the SGGCX2, you can choose between various sizes of memory cards, ranging from 32GB up to 256GB in capacity. Recording at a bit rate of 15Mbps (fixed), a 64GB SD card will give you over 9 hours of recording, and a 256GB card will allow you to hold a whopping 37.9 hours of video.
Of course, this being a high-end camera, it comes with all the must-haves such as loop recording, auto on/off, date and time stamp, speed stamp (can be turned off), GPS location display, and so on.
A G-sensor will notice any impacts and mark the relevant video files for safekeeping. A lock file button is also present that allows you to flag any footage that you would like to keep.
Parking mode is not supported though.
The SGGCX2 comes with a CPL filter that reduces reflections on the wind screen when driving in bright sunlight. For most dashboard cameras, this is an optional accessory that you have to buy separately.
The lens angle is 120°, which isn’t a whole lot, however bear in mind that a larger lens angle also leads to a fish-eye distortion (though some cameras compensate for that electronically).
This camera’s operating temperature range is quite large. It works between -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F), however the ideal operating temperature is from -10°C to 60°C (14°F to 140°F). Only the Lukas LK-7900 camera functions at even higher temperatures.
Differences To The Previous Model (SG9665GC v3)
Here’s a list of what has been updated with regards to the preceding model:
- Better night video
- Better quality lens (same as in SG9663DC front and rear camera)
- Lens swings 90 degrees for mounting on vertical windows
- Increased heat and cold tolerance
- Sony Exmor 323 sensor (as opposed to 322 in previous model)
- Warranty can be extended from 12 to 24 months by registering online
- Cables no longer hit the window when plugging them into the top ports
Summary
This is definitely one of our favorite single-channel dash cams for 2018. Its records great video quality, comparable to the more expensive (and bulkier) Vico-Opia2. Customer support is excellent, and Street Guardian have been consistently getting the best customer feedback of all the dash cam manufacturers out there.
Plus, depending on what size memory card you order, you can get it for below $200 at the time of writing. If you don’t need parking mode and are looking for a high quality, single-lens dash cam, the SGGCX2 is one of the best you can get at this time.
Too Expensive?
If you prefer to save about 25% of the price and don’t mind getting the older version, the SG9665GC v3 (also a great camera!) is currently on clearance sale, both on Amazon and eBay.
Video Samples
For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.
Day Time Video Sample
Day time video quality is excellent, very sharp, with vivid colors and a great level of detail. License plates are easily visible even when driving by.
Night Time Video Sample
Night video quality is very good. Most license plates of overtaking or overtaken cars can easily be read, even without pausing the video.
