Redtiger F17 Review
While F17 might sound like a new generation of fighter planes, it’s actually the model number of a quite affordable 3-channel dash cam by Redtiger. It records 1440p with the front camera, and 1080p rear and inside the car.
If you click on the links to one or more of the vendors listed above (which we would greatly appreciate, since the affiliate revenue is what keeps this web site afloat), you will see that the Redtiger F17 is listed as a 4K dash cam. This is not true though. With a Sony IMX335 sensor, it can only record 5 megapixels (MP).
However, to record true 4K video, you need at least an 8MP sensor (more about fake 4K dash cams). Redtiger do have a history of promoting fake 4K dash cams. That being said, they do make affordable, fairly reliable dash cams.
Design
The F17 features a classical oblong shape. Its interior camera is integrated in the main unit, surrounded by 4 infrared LEDS. It can be swiveled to the right and left, as well as up and down.
Next to the right of the interior camera, there is a 3″ LCD screen. Buttons to control the camera are situated underneath, including a lock file button.
The rear camera is cylindrical, and connects to the main unit by a long coaxial cable that you can tuck away behind your car’s interior linings. A pry tool for that purpose is included in the package.
Video Quality Samples
We’ve done a detailed analysis of all the videos that Redtiger F17 users around the world have shared on the internet. To rate a dashboard camera, we take two videos per channel, one at day and at one night. According to how good the video is, we assign a score that goes from 0 (poor) to 5 (excellent).
The overall video score for this device is 2.7/5 (good). You can use this score to compare it to other 3-channel dash cams in our comparison table.
Front Video Sample, Day
For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.
(Don’t forget to set the video resolution to 4K!)
Even though windshield reflections in this car are annoying due to the lack of a CPL filter, forward video quality during the day is very good (4.0/5). At higher speeds, you may have to pause the video to read license plates. You may even miss some, depending on the angle.
After the 2:00 minute mark though, with slower inner city traffic, most license plates are readable even when driving by.
Front Video Sample, Night
At night, readability of plates is very much hit and miss. While you might get a lucky angle once in a while, most are either washed out by our own headlights, or too blurry to read.
Our video rating: Fair (2.0/5)
Rear Video Sample, Day
Rear camera video starts at 11:18 in the video. Its quality is fair (2.0/5), at best.
As you can see, rear footage lacks sharpness. Your chances of catching license plates are slim, unless a car is coming up right behind you.
Rear Video Sample, Night
Rear video quality at night is mediocre (1.0/5). You can just about see what is happening behind your car, but forget about reading any license plates.
Interior Video Sample, Day
Interior video during the day, on the other hand, is nothing short of excellent (5/5). No complaints here. Everything is clearly visible.
Interior Video Sample, Night
At night, interior video is fair (2.0/5). It is slightly blurry, but you can see what is (or isn’t) going on in the car.

More Features
Like most modern dash cams, this camera has GPS and Wi-Fi. You can set Wi-Fi to either 2.4 or 5 GHz, with 5 GHz obviously being faster to transfer video files.
It will take SD cards up to 512 GB in capacity. With a 512 GB card, you can record for up to 24 hours before the oldest files start getting overwritten.
The user manual for the Redtiger F17 is 25 pages long. Its English version is well readable, brief and to the point.
Parking Mode
When powered with Redtiger’s hard wiring kit, the F17 supports two parking modes.
- Impact: Records a 10 second video when the G-sensor detects a collision (non-buffered)
- Time-lapse: Records continually at 1 fps
Conclusion
The F17 is a basic 3 channel dash cam for an affordable price. You get what you pay for: Video quality isn’t great, but acceptable if you’re not ready to pay $200+ for a Viofo or a Vantrue model.
Pros:
- Low price
- Easy to install and use
- Integrated cabin camera
- 3″ Screen
Cons:
- Mediocre night video quality
- No CPL filter
- Fake 4K
