Viofo A118C2 Review

The A118C2 is the successor of Viofo’s popular A118-C camera (also often referred to as B40-C). The A118C2 has a larger aperture for improved night video quality, and adds an option for mounting a CPL filter on the lens. The lens field of view is now 130 degrees instead of the predecessor’s 170 degrees. Also, the charger cable shielding has been improved, which should minimize any interference with FM radio.

This camera’s aperture is F2.0, while the predecessor had an aperture of F2.8. The A118C2’s larger aperture indicates a higher light sensitivity, resulting in much better night video. Consequently, the A118C2 records good to very good quality video at night. Daytime video is good also, but it does seem to be slightly on the blurry side unfortunately.

The A118C2 keeps the stealthy wedge shape which made the A118 series so successful. Simliar to its predecessors, one side of the camera sticks directly to the windshield with an adhesive patch. This eliminates the need for a mount and makes the camera look almost like a part of your car.

Most other features are identical to the A118-C, so we won’t go into too much detail here: Optional GPS is supported, SD cards can be up to 64GB in size, and the bit rate is 15 Mbps. A 1.5″ screen allows for easy configuration and video playback on-the-spot. Installation and set-up is fairly easy, and if you need any help, the company’s support team is said to be responsive and helpful.

Price-wise, the A118C2 is situated between its predecessor and the much more powerful A119.  All in all, this dash cam is a nice improvement over the A118-C, especially with regards to night video quality. However, the Viofo A119 does perform significantly better (if you can afford it).

Viofo A118C2 Video Samples

For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.

Day Time Video Sample

Day time video quality is good. The image is vivid and with good colors, however it’s not the sharpest video we’ve ever seen. License plates are generally readable when close.

Night Time Video Sample

Night video quality is good. License plates are easy to read even when driving by, however sometimes they get washed out by our own headlights when the other car is directly in front of us.
