Vantrue N5S Review
The Vantrue N5S is the first 4-channel (4CH) dash cam to feature Sony’s latest Starvis 2 sensors across every channel. Starvis 2 sensors are state-of-the-art in 2025 for video recording — in our opinion, no modern dash cam should be using older sensors.
With 4 video channels, the N5S not only records in front of and behind the vehicle like a standard 2CH dash cam does. It also gives you a clear view of the passenger cabin, from two angles. At night, the interior cameras automatically switch to infrared to record in the dark.
So the N5S gives you excellent coverage, from four different angles. But do more video channels actually result in higher security?
To find out, we evaluated sample videos from users around the world, focusing especially on image clarity, license plate readability, and low light performance.
Design
The design of the Vantrue N5S is simple: You get two camera units, one for the front windshield, and one for the rear one. Each unit has two lenses. One of the lenses records out through the window (exterior), and the other lens records the passenger cabin (interior).
Both interior cameras come equipped with infrared (IR) LEDs to record the passenger cabin at night.
On the rear of the front unit, there is a 3.19″ screen that lets you review videos on the spot, and configure the device if you’re not using the smart phone app for that.

The power button is on the left side of the camera. While recording in normal driving mode, it also serves as the “lock file” or “emergency” button.
Other features of the N5S include Wi-Fi, GPS, and various parking modes when powered by a hard-wiring kit. Additionally, this is the first 4-channel dash cam that can connect to the cloud. To do this, you need Vantrue’s LT01 dongle (~$130), plus a SIM card with a data plan.
Video Quality
The Vantrue N5S records 1440p video out the front and rear windows, and 1080p inside the car. To assess each channel’s video quality, we’ve reviewed a large variety of videos from users around the world, recorded both by day and at night.
In case you aren’t familiar with our rating system, here’s a quick recap: 0 (poor) — You can see almost nothing; 1 (mediocre) — can vaguely see what’s going on; 2 (fair) — can see the surroundings, but hard to read license plates; 3 (good) — can read most license plates by pausing the video; 4 (very good) — can read license plates even when driving by; 5 (excellent) — all environmental details clearly visible
Front Channel
While the front (exterior) channel supports a video resolution of up to 2592×1944 pixels, we recommend running it at 2560×1440 (1440p) which is a 16:9 format.
1944p is 4:3, so it’s a much narrower field of view.

You can read license plates of overtaking traffic by pausing the video. Hence, our score for forward video during the day is good (3.0/5).
At night, footage of the forward facing camera is relatively clear, but unfortunately we can’t read any of the license plates. They are washed out by our own car’s headlights.
Our verdict for the front video channel’s quality at night: Fair (2.0/5). While it’s impossible to read other cars’ license plates, we can see the car’s surroundings very well. This is true even on a dark country road without street lights.
Rear And Interior Channels
Instead of posting 6 videos (2 for each channel, at day and night), we’ll show you a great summary recorded by a Tesla driver here instead. It contains samples from all of the channels in short succession, starting at 2:16.
From this and from about a dozen other videos we’ve reviewed, we find the video quality for the 4 channels to be as follows:

As stated above, forward video quality is good at day, and fair at night.
The rear camera performs well during the day, but at night, video quality leaves something to be desired.
Interior footage is good overall. You can clearly see everything that’s going on in the car, both at day and at night. Day time video for the front interior camera is excellent, it’s hard to imagine a clearer picture of the passenger cabin. At night, footage obviously is black and white due to the infrared recording.
Averaging the scores of all 4 channels by day and night, we get an overall video score of 3.0/5. As you can see in our comparison table, this makes the N5S the best 4CH dash cam currently on the market.
Parking Mode
When powered through a hard-wiring kit ($20), the Vantrue N5S supports the following 4 parking modes:
- Collision detection (wakes up upon impact)
- Motion detection (buffered, saves 10s before and 30s after the event)
- Low bit rate (1080p or 720p @ 15fps — we recommend 1080p, 720p is not enough to capture details)
- Time lapse (low frame rate)

User Manual
The user manual for the Vantrue N5S is available in various languages. The English version is 45 pages long. It explains the functionality of the dash cam thoroughly, and in decent if not always excellent English.
Conclusion
In terms of video quality, the Vantrue N5S is the best 4CH dash cam on the market at this time (2025). Features such as buffered parking mode and cloud support are useful enhancements.
However, despite having four Starvis 2 sensors, night video quality of the N5S is still not great. Good quality 3CH dash cams can achieve better video quality, for a similar price.
So, to answer our initial question whether more video channels result in higher security:
It depends whether you prefer having an extra channel with interior footage, or whether it’s more important for you to read license plates. The rear interior channel greatly enhances security for taxi and ride share drivers, and it also adds an extra angle of view through the side windows.
Thus, if recording the interior of the car from two sides is more important to you than capturing as many license plates as possible around you, then yes, the Vantrue N5S is perfect for you.
