BlackVue DR650GW-2CH Truck Review

Pittasoft have been the first (and so far, the only) dash cam manufacturer to release a front and rear camera for trucks and commercial vehicles. The DR650GW-2CH Truck is identical to the DR650GW-2CH standard version, except that the rear camera is replaced by a heavy duty, rugged camera that can be mounted on the outside of a truck.

We already did an extensive review of the DR650GW-2CH standard version, so we’ll just briefly point out the differences between the Truck and standard versions here.

The rear camera of the Truck version is built into a weather proof casing, and comes with a 15m (49ft) water proof coaxial cable to connect to the main unit. It also has 6 infrared lights that improve visibility at night. The actual camera is the same, and day time video quality is similar to the non-truck version. At night, video quality is actually somewhat superior due to the IR lights that the standard DR650GW-2CH does not have.

To clarify, we normally don’t recommend infrared lights for dash cams. For dashboard cameras that you install behind your windshield, IR lights can cause reflections, and they don’t improve visibility as they can hardly outshine your car’s headlights, anyway. However, as this is a rear view camera and mounted outside of the vehicle, the IR lights can actually make a difference (though minor).

For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.

Front Video

For front videos please refer to our main DR650GW-2CH review.

Day Time Rear Video

Day time rear video is fair. While a bit blurry due to the low resolution of 720p, it allows you to see what’s going on behind you, and license plates of other vehicles are readable when close.

Night Time Rear Video

At night, the rear camera’s video quality is average. License plates are readable when close, and the IR lights do seem to make a difference as compared to the DR650GW-2CH standard version. However, bear in mind that this is a video published by the manufacturer, so it was likely recorded under ideal conditions.
