HDVR-180 Review

The ABEO HDVR-180 is the 1080p version of the popular HDVR-150 rear-view mirror dash cam. Sold by KiWaV, this camera offers very good video quality during the day and fair video quality at night. You can run it at 1080p with a frame rate of 30fps, or at 720p with a frame rate of 60fps.

UPDATE: The newest generation of this dash cam is called HDVR-180 G2 and replaces the previous versions HDVR-180 and HDVR-180C. The main differences to the 1st generation models is that the G2 cams have Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), improving picture quality in low lighting situations. Also the HDVR-180 G2 supports parking mode, meaning that the camera will start recording off its internal battery when your car is parked and the G-sensor detects an impact. This would be useful in the event of a hit-and-run.

UPDATE: The 3rd generation of this model has been released, called HDVR-180 G3. It includes features like LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System), FCWS (Forward Collision Warning System), and Auto-Defense, which can periodically take photos at specified time intervals even when the car is parked.

Just like its predecessor, the HDVR-180 clips right onto your car’s existing rear-view mirror. It is compatible with all rear-view mirrors in use today. The rear-view mirror cam technology makes for very stealthy dash cams, as a casual onlooker would generally just see a mirror slightly larger than normal, with the camera’s lens on the back.

This device features a 2.4″ screen, integrated in the mirror’s surface. This makes for easy setup of the camera and you can also use it for quick playback of your recorded videos right in the car.

All the dash cam must-have features are there, such as auto on/off, loop recording, time and date stamp on video, and a G-sensor that keeps your video files from getting accidentally overwritten should an impact or abrupt braking be detected.

It is worth noting that the Taiwanese vendor KiWaV have been consistently praised for their excellent post-sales support. Any issues are addressed promptly and courteously, up to and including a complete hardware replacement should it become necessary. That said, their cameras are generally quite reliable so most customers probably won’t have to deal with the vendor’s support in the first place.

HDVR-180 G3 Video Samples

For full original video quality, make sure to watch on full screen and select maximum video resolution (use the cog icon in lower right corner). You may have to rewind the video after changing the resolution.

Day Time Video Sample

Day time video is very sharp and clear, with vivid colors. While the video footage does seem slightly shaky at times, all the important details, including signs and license plates, are easy to discern even from a distance.

Night Time Video Sample

Night video quality is fair. While it still looks slightly fuzzy in dimly lit areas, the important details are generally well visible. License plates can be read easily from up close, and sometimes also at medium range.
